I have made this for my sweetheart, celebrating our first anniversary together!
The gem is a fancy cut rombous amethyst set in a steady silver prong setting. I am just learning how to set gems by myself, so this was a great exercise!
What a beautiful gem. Noticing what you said about nicking it, would it be possible to have the prongs grasp the gem by its points instead? This would stop the gem from becoming damaged like that, in theory. Just a thought.
Yes! That would be the traditional setting of this type of gem, protecting the corners. Some professional gem setters refuse to set this fancy cut type of stone, and I really wanted the shape to come out and display a hint of boldness in this piece. Otherwise I would have made a more protectiv "chest/bail" setting instead of the prongs.
I am always a bit worried when wearing this, afraid I'll nick the ends. this is not the ultimate setting for this kind of cut, but I am very proud of it and the stone is beautiful.
I don't know how to do any metalwork, so forgive me if what I mention might be impossible. Would it be possible to make a thin layer of metal for the stone to sit in? You could keep the prongs and it would look almost the same, although then light wouldn't shine through it so nicely...

Thank you for noticing it!
